Hi all,

I am a double major at CSUN: English ESM and Linguistics with a TESL minor. I will graduate in May and enter the credential program this fall. I was a cadette girl scout leader all last year, so I have plenty of experience with my target age group. I also have an adopted thirteen-year-old sister who is certifiably insane. (Again, necessary experience for a future teacher) I am a licensed esthetician and worked in dentistry for twelve years. I love both those professions dearly, but neither offers health insurance, which I need. I need to change careers, and since I was tired of hearing people tell me I should be a teacher, I decided to just go ahead and become a teacher. I home-schooled my sister for a few years and have been tutoring, officially and unofficially, since the fourth grade. Teaching has always come pretty naturally to me and I find it fun and fulfilling. Originally, I was a Spanish major and planning to be a Spanish teacher. My AA is in Spanish. One semester I did a service-learning project wherein I taught English to the Spanish-speaking employees of the local hospital and I fell in love. (with the experience, not the students) I knew I had found my calling. I must teach ESL. I later found out that ESL teachers are generally English credential holders, not Spanish credential holders, so I switched majors and added the TESL minor. To assuage myself after giving up Spanish, I added a Linguistics major for fun. Yes, Linguistics is fun. I love words and language.
I have two dogs and one cat. I will soon be inheriting a kitten to add to the group. I have no children of my own but am frequently "blessed" with the charge of others'. In fact, one of my first real jobs was as a nanny.

“I am a licensed esthetician and worked in dentistry for twelve years. I have faced similar situations, but, being young and naïve, I have belived that I am invincible. Thus, I have chosen jobs regardless of health insurance perks. Three years ago, on a skateboarding adventure I picked up a sewer grate and accidentally dropped it on my foot. My big toe was essentially ripped off. When I took my shoe off, blood dumped out and my toe looked like the inside of a hot pocket (sorry). I went to the emergency room and got put back together. Not having health insurance, this was an extremely sticky situation. However, after all was said and done, I only ended up paying about 300 dollars, the rest was covered courtesy of the U.S. government. Long story short….I wish you were able to pick your job based on your love of it, not the benefits. With any luck, things will start to change after this years presidential election.

Wow! you are quite a renaissance woman! It's insane to see how much you have been apart of- and are taking on. First a switch in majors, then you double major, I am fully impressed in your dedication. I fully understand your insane sister, I actually have twin sixteen year old sisters at home, and they are definitely a handfull, though I would never even attempt to brave homeschooling. That's torture I don't think I could bare. Despite being a creative writing concentration, I do agree that Linguistics can be interesting... but not grammar, you will never get me to believe that grammar is anything but evil. Well, I can't wait to get to know you in class!

WOW!!! I am really impressed with all of the achievements you've made in your life thus far!!! I think that with such a deep experience working with students, you definitely won't have any trouble teaching. I'm working with students currently and sometimes, they just make me so upset. I don't know how long I can be patient for at times but I suppose I will be able to learn. I can't believe you are double majoring!!! That is really impressive. I commend you on your efforts and hope to be able to work as hard as you do in the future...
